J.R.R. Tolkien is part of the Christian Encounters Series, “a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church.” I downloaded J.R.R. Tolkien in EPUB format to my iPod touch to read.
We’re big fans of Tolkien’s works in my family. As I write this, we’re having a Lord of the Rings marathon – watching all the Lord of the Rings movies back-to-back. I studied the Lord of the Rings in university, already having read it multiple times by that time, dating back to when I was 11 years old. I learned a lot by reading this book – it turned out I didn’t know all that much about Tolkien!
Tolkien was homeschooled in the early years, and his own mother taught him Latin and French. You probably already know that Tolkien was a linguist – most people are in awe of the Elven languages he created. Did you know he worked for two years on the Oxford English Dictionary? He even said that he learned more in those two years than at any other time of his life!
He also was a big fan of Norse mythology and all things Icelandic, including the language. Norse tales highly influenced his writing of The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, etc. Did you also know he was a Christian, a good friend of C.S. Lewis’, and had a hand in Lewis’ becoming a Christian?
This is a terrific book to read for Tolkien fans, and it was interesting to read and not “dry” as one usually expects of biographies. I’ll be handing the e-book for my son to read next, as part of his homeschool studies.
Retail price for both print or e-reader (EPUB, Kindle, etc) versions is $12.00 US. You can read a sample of the book by clicking on “full-screen flipbook” HERE. I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
