22 (Wolfville) Seedy Saturday at 106 Greenwich Road by Noggins, 11am to 2pm. $2 per person or $5 per family. Seed swap, vendors, music, door prizes, activities.

May 24 (Halifax) – The Homeschool Journey in Nova Scotia Conference. Keynote Speaker Dr. Mark Hamby of Lamplighter Ministries.

January

January 7 (Sackville) Young Homeschoolers Meetup at the Sackville Public Library, 1-3pm. For ages 0-9. Meet other homeschool families. Activities. Bring a snack.

January 10 (Hammonds Plains) Winter Homeschool Dance at Hammonds Plains Community Centre, 6-9pm. WHAT: A winter themed semi-formal-ish dance for the older homeschool kids (ages 11-16). DJ Peter Bensen will be entertaining the kids (with lights and the best dance music they want) there will be pizza, candy, and snacks available. Tables set up for socializing if you don’t feel like taking to the floor. COST: Tickets will be approx $30/child to cover the rental, DJ, food and decorations. November

21-December 7th (Spryfield) The Little Mermaid, a family panto by Wayne Miller at The Theatre Arts Guild’s Pond Playhouse.

25 (Sackville) Young Homeschoolers Meetup at the Sackville Public Library, 1-3pm. Meet other homeschool families. Activities to keep little hands busy (colouring sheets, blocks). Best suited for age 0-9.

October

12-14 (Baddeck) Fibre Festival. The South Haven guild of weavers, spinners, and dyers present a sale with workshops and demonstrations. Meet the makers of high quality handwoven, handknit, handfelted, handspun, handdyed textiles and try your hand at spinning, weaving or take a short workshop and learn to weave tapestry, hook rugs, felt an ornament. Three days of fibre goodness!

26 (Sydney Mines) Mastodons of Cape Breton! Research: Past, Present, and Future at the Cape Breton Fossil Centre, 159 Legatto Street at 6:30pm. Dr. Tim Fedak, Curator of Geology for the Nova Scotia Museum will take us through the history of mastodon finds from Cape Breton, what they tell us about the past, and what potential exists for new finds in the future. After the talk, attendees are welcome to tour the Fossil Centre and the ‘Age of the Mastodon’ exhibit, guided by Dr. Fedak (one of the designers of the exhibit) and Fossil Centre Curator, Dr. Jason Loxton. Admission is free (but donations are welcome).

4 (Sydney) Join some friends from Unamaki Homeschool Meetups from 2-4pm at Petersfield Provincial Park for some social and exploring fun (pending good weather). All welcome!

13 (Blockhouse) Communuty Choir at the Waldorf School at 1:30pm. Children and parents welcome. There is no cost to join. If you have questions, email ruthlillington@gmail.com or contact the school at sue.leblanc@waldorfns.org.

15 (across NS) Open Farm Day. Visit farms, ask questions, have fun.

July

10 (Windsor) History Walk at Clifton Museum Park, 6-7pm. Free history walk on the Clifton Museum Park grounds. Enjoy an easy walk around the trails and learn about the gypsum, apple trees, events, and people that shaped our area. Meet in the main parking lot at Clifton Museum Park, 424 Clifton Avenue, Windsor. For further information please call (902) 798-2915.

12 (Bridgewater) Hand stitched cards at the DesBrisay Museum, 1-3pm. Join Wile Carding Mill staff as we make beautiful hand stitched cards. Learn the basic skill to add a great personal touch to any occasion.

13 (Granville Ferry) Regency Picnic at North Hills Museum, Noon to 3pm. You are cordially invited to observe a regency picnic! Reenators will be onsite at North Hills Museum demonstrating authentic skills and activities. Visitors are welcome to observe the festivities, enjoy light refreshments, and take a tour of the museum.

14 (Granville Ferry) Show & Shine Car Show at North Hills Museum, 10am-3pm. Join us for the annual Show & Shine Car Show at North Hills Museum! The show grounds feature a wide grassy lawn to park and display your vehicles alongside the beautiful heritage property. Indoor public washrooms and shaded areas are available. Food will be available for purchase on-site.Visitor admission by donation. Vehicle registration is $10 and includes automatic raffle prize entry.

14 (Starr’s Point) Lemonade in the Garden at Prescott House Museum, 1-3pm. Spend an afternoon visiting the museum and learning the history of the grounds and gardens of the house. Then head to the garden to enjoy a cold glass of lemonade, visit with our volunteer gardeners and the members of the Blomidon Naturalist Club to learn about their pollinator gardens including the one at Prescott. Learn about our plans for the grounds and gardens. Maybe grab a seat and bring a book or even a sketchpad. The Victorian Games will be out for the young and the young at heart to try! Admission to the house is by donation, the lemonade and gardens will be free!

19 (Iona) Donald Og Day at Highland Village, 10am-3pm. Join us as we celebrate the Donald Òg legend and the settlement of the Iona area by MacNeils from the Isle of Barra. On board a British man of war patrolling the Bras d’Or Lake following the 1758 Seige of Louisbourg, Dòmhnall Òg MacNeil brought news of the lake’s natural wonders home to his native Isle of Barra. Experience Gaelic culture firsthand, and take in demonstrations of traditional skills and food, along with a special running of Cash’s Shingle Mill. We will also be joined by our friends from the Mi’kmaq community and the Fortress of Louisbourg. Regular admission applies.

19 (Bridgewater) Wet-felted Dryer Ball part 1 at the DesBrisay Museum, 1-3pm. Join us as we make a wet felted dryer ball. You will pick, card and felt wool into a functional and eco friendly dryer ball.

20 (Lunenburg) Theresa E. Connor Birthday Celebration at Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, 9:30am to 5pm. Our schooner, Theresa E. Connor turns 86 years old! This will be a fun day at the museum, where we celebrate her long life with games, challenges, crafts, and special one-of-a-kind presentations.  

20 & 21 (New Ross) I Have an Axe To Grind at Ross Museum. Enjoy demonstrations of tool sharpening techniques, using a grindstone. Learn what tools can be sharpened using the grindstone, and the proper way to use this device.

21 (Windsor) Wag ‘n Walk at Clifton Museum Park, 9:30am – main parking lot, 424 Clifton Avenue, Windsor Join us this summer for our Wag ‘n Walk events. This 30 min guided dog walk is a great way to meet other dog lovers in the area, find new routes and enjoy old favourites with our furry friends. Free treats courtesy of Feeds ‘n Needs and Pet Valu Windsor. Donations will be accepted for the Hants County SPCA. For further information please call (902) 798-2915.

21 (Sherbrooke) Family Picnic Sunday at Sherbrooke Village. Enjoy a relaxing Family Picnic Sunday with “Grab-and-Go” picnic lunches, Victorian teas, and era-appropriate recreational activities for the whole family to enjoy.

26 (Bridgewater) Wet-felted Dryer ball, part 2 at the DesBrisay Museum, 1-3pm. Return with your “dry” dryer ball and we will needlefelt a design on it to create a work of art

June
1 (Lower Sackville) Homeschool Journey in Nova Scotia Conference at Rock Church. Babysitter Course being offered by St. John’s Ambulance at the conference for ages 11-15 at a discounted rate. Click the link to register.

5 (Fredericton, New Brunswick) The faculties of Science, Engineering and Nursing are hosting a “UNB Day of STEM for Homeschooled Children” on June 5th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Inquiry-based, hands-on activities related to chemistry, physics, Earth science, math, engineering and nursing at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The cost is absolutely free and the goal is to inspire children to explore STEM-related subjects.

12 (Riverview New Brunswick) Homeschool Graduation Gala, 6-8pm. We invite the 2024 Homeschool graduates & their families to a night of celebration! This is an occasion for homeschoolers to get prom ready and be recognized for their achievements amongst their families and other homeschoolers. This event features a procession of the graduates, a sit down dinner, motivational words from special guests, and each graduate will be recognized with a certificate of congratulations. Amber Vickers Photography will be onsite to capture the event as well as take graduate & family portraits which will be available for purchase. The Parish Choir, along with our talented Youth Choristers, will present a 45 minute concert of sacred choral music. Among the featured works will be Benjamin Britten’s celebrated cantata, ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’, based on the poetry of the 18th c mystic Christopher Smart. Following the concert, all are welcome to the Music Room for a very special Open House and ‘Soft Launch’ of the Saint George’s Song School. Refreshments will be served, and all are most welcome! Admission to the concert is by donation, in support of Song School bursaries.

25 (Halifax) Asian Culture for Love in Halifax at Halifax Central Library, 3:30-5pm. A series of cultural showcases, including Dragon Dance, Kids’ Kungfu Dance, K-Pop Workshop, and Hanfu Fashion Show.

25 Forest Ecosystems from 2-5pm at Jerry Lawrence Provincial Park. Learn how to conduct a forest plot survey – looking at trees, plants, soil, insects and animals. Freshwater invertebrate identification (who doesn’t love critter dipping)! Invasive species – what are they and how can we reduce their impact. Afterwards, kick your shoes off and relax with some nature journaling!

22 (W Ship Harbour) Earth Day Art Hive from 2-6pm at the Deanery Project. Come and spend the afternoon at The Deanery Project on Earth Day! We have partnered with Life as Medicine to offer this Art Hive event. We’ll have a mini studio set up where community members are invited to come and create an art piece guided by Life as Medicine facilitators. No experience necessary! 24 (Halifax) MSVU Science Circle, 6:15-7:30pm at Mount Saint Vincent University. Join Dr. Kelly Resmer for the Chemistry Science Circle to learn more about Scientific reasoning skills: how do we think like a scientist? During this fun evening of chemistry demonstrations and activities we will develop lab skills to get us curious about observing the world around us. We will design experiments to test a hypothesis.
