A Day in Our Homeschool

Most non-homeschoolers are surprised when we describe our typical homeschool day.  They expect our days to be structured just like school, starting at 9am and ending around 2 or 3pm, with scheduled breaks, with all work done at desks.  This is far from the truth in our homeschool.

Our typical homeschool weekday starts with a staggered breakfast, as each of us awakens on our own schedule.  Although today we all seemed to tumble out of bed around 9am 🙂  I am not a morning person – up until recently only my son was a morning person, but now that he’s almost 13, he sleeps in too!

9am – noon/1pm – My two children, aged 8 and 12 will typically work through their individual work first: Math, Latin, Mind Benders, Logic, Literature/Reading, Spelling, etc.  Some of their work is done at the computer, some on the floor or the window seat, and some even does get done at a table.  We will then snuggle up on the couch and do History, Science, French, and some reading together.  We are typically done our formal homeschool day by noon or 1pm.

1-3pm – My children engage in some of their personal interests.  My 8 year old daughter will often make some jewelery or draw or engage in something crafty, or practice her gymnastics moves on our gym mats.  My 12 year old will often work on his chainmail creations or work on some of the plays or books he’s working on writing.  Either child will also be found practising dance, reading, practising their lines for their plays, singing, or playing piano.

3pm onward – Screen time – The children can play video games, Wii games, or watch tv.  Almost every day there is an activity of some sort to go to, starting sometime between 4 and 6pm: Dance (ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, technique, productions), gymnastics, drama, musical theatre, playwriting, and then usually at least one of us in the family is involved in a play somewhere and has weekly rehearsals.  Today we all headed to our family Musical Theatre class at 6pm.

On a typical week, we homeschool Monday through Thursday.  Friday is our day to go to the library and sometimes to wrap up some work that didn’t get completed throughout the week.  We love the flexibility of homeschooling, and the time it gives our children to pursue their interests!

Love, Luck &
Laughter,
