Nutrition 101 – Review, Freebies & Free Webinar

Growing Healthy Homes is a family owned and operated publishing company that produces Christian, family-centered & health-infused resources as well as educational materials for instruction in the use of essential oils.  I received their Nutrition 101 book in exchange for an honest review 🙂

Nutrition 101 is a 448-page tome which covers Science, Anatomy, Biology, Nutrition, and Health and can be studied with the entire family as a homeschool curriculum, or merely to start learning about and improving your health as a family.  The 12 main systems of the body are covered in 6 units:

Unit 1: The Brain and Nervous System
Unit 2: The Digestive System
Unit 3: The Respiratory, Olfactory, Auditory, and Visual Systems
Unit 4: The Muscular and Skeletal Systems
Unit 5: The Cardiovascular and Immune Systems
Unit 6: The Endocrine System and Emotions

Each Chapter is designed to be implemented over the course of a week and covers information about the body and how food affects it.  At the end of each Chapter you will find Discussion Questions, Activities, Additional Resources, and a “Power” Recipe.  Biblical Scripture is also incorporated throughout.  All of these elements combine to help you retain the information and put it into practice.  I’m really enjoying starting to eat an even more healthy diet in our home.

Nutrition 101 truly is for the whole family.  My 7 year old and 12 year old have been enjoying learning along with me.  My 7 year old daughter learned a lot right from the very first chapter on the brain.  You should have heard her going on about how helmets are so important to protect the brain and all the different things that can happen when the brain is injured: I was such a proud momma 🙂

The Appendices include even more recipes, a shopping list, a fantastic chart & detailed information on sugar-substitutes (I can’t wait to try some of these I’d never even heard of), some terrific natural cleaning recipes, a Nail Health Guide, a list of the Top 40 foods to avoid and a Top 40 foods to enjoy, a list of other health books & resources, and more.  I was disappointed in the appendix article warning about the “dangers” of microwave cooking.  The actual scientific research on this topic is far from conclusive, and there is at least as much positive research out there as negative.  Further disappointing is the fact that the links referenced to in this article were to only 3 websites (one of which is a magazine priding itself on, among other things, covering “conspiracies” and “UFO’s”, and another of which promotes the science of “metaphysics” and metempsyhcosis”) and no links to actual studies.  This seems to be a blip in an otherwise excellent resource however.

Click HERE for a free 27-page sample.  And you can download more freebies: mp3 files on Essential Oils and other health-related topics HERE.

Nutrition 101: Choose Life is available for purchase on CD-Rom (useful for printing out recipes & shopping lists) for $79.95 US OR as a physical book for $99.95 US OR get both book and CD-rom for $129.95  plus shipping (contact the vendor regarding International shipping as there is no info. available on the website).  Buy now and receive a 15% discount – the same discount you would receive at a homeschool conference!  Just use the discount code TOScrew11.

And there’s more!  Attend a FREE webinar tomorrow on Nutrition 101: Choose Life, April 21st at 5pm Atlantic (4pm Eastern).  Sera Johnson doesn’t just tell others how to achieve nutritional wellness, she made that journey with her family too.  Sera shows how she improved her family’s health by teaching how food – good and bad – affects the body.  Pick up tips on how to get even the pickiest of eaters to eat healthy food and love it.

Science Weekly – Review & great downloadable freebies

***Science weekly no longer exists. Please search “science” in the search bar for other resources***

Science Weekly is “Today’s Science for Today’s Students”.  We received their newsletter in exchange for an honest review 🙂

Each newsletter has reading, writing, math, critical thinking, and interactive experiment components.  Level Pre-A to Level E correspond to Kindergarten to Gr. 5/6.  Each level is assigned by reading level.  You may find that your child is ready for a level or two ahead of grade level, so be sure to check out the free online newsletters (see below) to see which level would be appropriate for your child.

We received the “Fractions” newsletter for all levels, including the Teacher’s Guide.  My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the playing with colour and paint portions of Level B.  We also liked learning, in the older levels, about how ancient Egyptians depicted fractions.  And in the Teacher’s Guide, we learned that fraction comes from the Latin word fractio, “to break”, and we love Latin words (we’re learning Latin in our homeschool).  If you are teaching more than one grade level in your homeschool, you may want to start by reading the oldest level together and then doing the appropriate level activities with each child, or just doing them all together.

Science Weekly is a bit of a misnomer, you receive 15 newsletters per year.  Here were the topics for the 2010-2011 year:
You don’t have to just take my word for what these newsletters are like – the Science weekly website has loads of freebies!

Download all the levels and Teacher’s Guide for the topic of Coral Reefs here.

Download free newsletters with answer keys for Grades 1-4, in both online newsletter with flippable pages format and pdf  here. Topics include Pyramids, Living in Space, Kites, Hurricanes, and Dams.

Download the pdf files of the entire Sport Science series of newsletters (across all the grades), including Teacher’s notes here (it says samples, but each download is of the entire 4-page newsletter)

You will find the Order form to subscribe here.  The cost for one year for one student is $19.99 US for 15 issues over the course of the year, including the Teacher’s Guide for each issue.  If you’d like to get together with your homeschool group and order, you can get a minimum of 20 subscriptions for $4.95 US per student per year.  Add 10% to your order for shipping & handling.
