Geek Schooling: Build a Snow Pony

Do you have a My Little Pony fan? Why not build a snow pony?

Build a Snow Pony

Everyone in my family is a geek. We like to do a lot of activities we call part of Geek Schooling. My 11 year old daughter loves My Little Pony. You might remember that we have dressed up as ponies together for Hal-Con in the past. Since we have had packing snow this week (probably the first time this winter!) she decided to make a snow pony, Pinkie Pie, instead of a boring snowman. I helped a bit, with direction from my daughter.

She decided to have Pinkie Pie sitting on her haunches, for stability. First we made a snowball for her bottom and a snowball for her barrel and shaped her legs.

Build a snow pony

A snowball for her head and a snowball for her snout came next and then Pinkie Pie’s crazy mane.

Her tail was sculpted on the ground behind her and her cutie mark was carved, although it’s hard to see in the photo. If we wanted to make it pop, we could have added a bit of food colouring to it.

Build a snow pony

The eyes and nostrils are simply leaves pressed into the snow.

It was a lot of fun to build a snow pony! It was a terrific, artistic endeavour that included some problem solving skills. We are thinking of making Wallace and Gromit next time we have a chance. It won’t be tomorrow, because it’s pouring rain outside right now!

What fun, geeky characters have you made out of snow? Let me know in the comments below!

There aren’t enough hours in the day, right? With homeschooling, work, preparing meals, cleaning up after everyone, and putting yet another load of laundry on, there’s very little time for sleep – let alone fitting in arts or crafts or even time for DIY and crafting just for you!

Do you look at that bare wall In the family room or that tatty tablecloth on the kitchen table, and just wish you had a few hours to do something about them? Or do you browse through those wonderful crafting successes on Pinterest and think to yourself that “one day” you’ll have a few more minutes to yourself so that you too can create something incredible?

You’re not alone – there’s a huge community of people out there who are feeling just as frustrated as you are! I’m one of them!

Thankfully though, there’s an exciting new product to help you quickly and easily get you and your kids into (or back into) the creative projects you’ve been desperate to start. Smaug!

Is your family full of Tolkien fans? Ours is! This past week we were delighted to have the chance to go to the movies as a family to see the second instalment of The Hobbit. While it wasn’t true to the book, it was quite the thrill ride!

At the beginning of December, before the movie came out, my 9 year old daughter entered a Smaug drawing contest. Here is her creation:

If you would like to see some of the other entries, you can check them out At Smaug Art Competition. Enjoy!

Fun With Art: See The Light Art Projects – Review

Art projects

In our homeschool, we have already had the pleasure of enjoying See The Light’s Art Class DVDs. My children and I were thrilled to receive a DVD from their Art Projects Series in exchange for an honest review 🙂

Since 2011, See The Light has been teaching drawing skills with a Biblical perspective and teaching Bible stories through art. I received the Sunflowers (in the style of Vincent Van Gogh) Art Project DVD to work through with my 9 year old and 14 year old.

Each DVD requires only basic art supplies such as pencils or pastels that homeschoolers probably already have on hand. The first thing we did was go out and buy a few supplies we needed. We had some oil pastels kicking around the house, but were in need of a new set, and were able to pick one up for just $6.99! Here are all the supplies we gathered (we didn’t have paper towels so we used the fancy fall napkins for cleaning the pastels LOL):

Art projects

While watching the DVD and going through each lesson, my children learned so much about Vincent Van Gogh and post-Impressionism, and so did I! I had no idea that he almost became a clergyman instead of an artist, and that he did missionary work.

Here is my son’s masterpiece. He is a reluctant artist, but I think he did a good job capturing post-Impressionism:

And my daughter just loves to draw. Can you tell?

I had to force her to stop for the day after Lesson 1 on the DVD. I let her just work through all the rest of the DVD on day 2 LOL. She loved it so much! She was so inspired, she even started working on a tulip still life on her own. Both of my children worked entirely independently, right along with the DVD. I just enjoyed watching them 🙂

The Art Project DVD series is designed for ages 10 and up. Use the 9 DVD set as a half-credit course for your high schooler, or use the suggested activities for enriching the course and making it a full credit with this High School Fine Arts Credit PDF.

Learn more about the Art Projects DVDs at this link by watching the video at the top that says “click to learn more”. Click here to watch excerpts of the Tiffany Window DVD under “Videos” to see what Art Projects are like. You’ll find that artist Pat Knepley is both a skilled artist and a delightful, personable teacher. You can also Like and Follow See the Light on Facebook and Twitter, to access all sorts of great art ideas for your kids, daily.

Each individual Art Project DVD is $14.99 US plus shipping. The shipping cost is reasonable even to Canada – the site gave me a cost of only $3 for shipping to Nova Scotia. You can also buy the full year, 9 DVD set for $99.99 US. You may also like to check out my review of the Art Class DVDs.

Nail Art Fun for Your Homeschooler

My 9 year old daughter is very artsy and she’s always drawing or cake decorating, or looking for something else artistic to do. She saw a great video on Always Ice-Cream that she wanted to try. It showed how to make swirly, marbled patterns on your nails. It can be fun to do non-traditional art activities in our homeschool, so we watched it together, got out what we needed, and gave it a try.

Materials:

Toothpicks
Cotton swabs
Nail polish remover
Small bowl with warm water
Scotch tape
Dark nail polish (black was recommended, we used dark purple)
Light nail polish (white was recommended, we used bright pink)

1) Use the scotch tape to cover the skin around your nails. You will not be able to cover it all, so don’t worry about it. And make sure you leave an overlap or tab so that you can easily pull off the tape afterward – make sure it isn’t so tight that you will end up smearing your nail polish while removing it. (After we did this, I read that petroleum jelly all around your nails works even better).

image

2) Take your dark nail polish and let a drop drip into the bowl of warm water.

image

3) Let the dark nail polish spread a bit (jiggle the bowl a bit if you need to), and then drip some light coloured nail polish on top of the dark.

Light on top of dark

4) Let each layer spread a bit, and then add more dark, then more light. Layer the nail polish quickly, so you don’t end up with a solid mess. Then swirl into a design you like with a toothpick.

image

5) Lower your nail into the nail polish, nail down, and leave it there for 5 seconds. While your finger is still in the bowl, take a cotton swab and swirl all the excess nail polish around it onto the swab.

image

6) Remove your finger from the bowl and gently peel off the scotch tape.

image

7) Dip a cotton swab in the nail polish remover and swab around your finger nail to get rid of excess polish.

Remove excess polish

8) Repeat until all your nails are done!

Marbled nails

Just a note, that this can get very messy, so it’s great to have Mom’s help. Excess nail polish does come off eventually 🙂

If you like, once you’re done, explore the science of why the nail polish is suspended in the water (density, just like oil and water), and maybe even experiment with making your own nail polish colours.

Love, Luck &
Laughter,

Kimberly

Drawing With See The Light – Review AND Giveaway!

logo

For the last two years, See The Light has been teaching drawing skills with a Biblical perspective and teaching Bible stories through art. I was thrilled to receive a DVD from their Art Class series in exchange for an honest review 🙂

Vol 4

I chose Volume 4 since my 9 year old daughter is very artistic, always drawing, and I wanted her to have some lessons to “sink her teeth into”. She loved the DVD!

Volume 4: Color Blending Techniques consists of the following lessons:

Lesson 13: Blending With Colored Pencils

Lesson 14: Practice Makes Perfect

Lesson 15: Blending With Chalk Pastels

Lesson 16: Putting it All Together

In the first lesson, Blending With Colored Pencils, just when my daughter was getting frustrated and impatient, Pat took out the Bible and started chatting about Patience! The timing was perfect.

My daughter was inspired after drawing some fish, a flower, and more along with the lessons on the video. Afterward we finished watching the lessons on the second day, she drew this lovely bird using the techniques she learned with pencil crayons:

Each DVD only requires basic art supplies such as pencils or pastels that homeschoolers probably already have on hand. Click here to watch a free lesson under “Videos” to see what Art Class is all about. You’ll find that artist Pat Knepley is both a skilled artist and a delightful, personable teacher. Be sure to watch the “Trailer” video as well, in which Pat chats with a homeschooling mother of 6 about how she uses the Art Class DVD’s. You can also Like and Follow See the Light on Facebook and Twitter, to access all sorts of great art ideas for your kids, daily.

Each Art Class DVD is $14.99 US plus shipping, except the shipping for the Volume 1 DVD is currently free to both the US and Canada! You can also buy the full year, 9 DVD set for $99.99 US. After your child is done this first year set, they can move onto the Year 2 set: Art Projects.Vol 1

One of my lucky readers is going to win a copy of Volume 1: The Basics! You have until February 18th at midnight Atlantic time to enter. Open to US and Canada only. Just sign in with your email or Facebook and follow the directions. Good luck!
